Submissions
What are the terms of submission for the JBHR?
Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). Please note: "publication" in a working-paper series does not constitute prior publication. In addition, by submitting material to James Blair Historical Review, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at James Blair Historical Review. If you have concerns about the submission terms for James Blair Historical Review, please contact the editors at [email protected].
How do I submit my work to the JBHR?
Please send a digital copy of your essay to [email protected]. Our Submissions Editor will respond to you once the submissions window has close confirming your submission!
Are you still taking submissions via ScholarWorks?
No, the JBHR only reviews submissions sent to our email: [email protected]. Submissions received through ScholarWorks will not be considered for publication.
Who can submit to the JBHR?
Any university student may submit an original article to be considered for publication in James Blair Historical Review provided he or she owns the copyright to the work being submitted or is authorized by the copyright owner or owners to submit the article. Authors are the initial owners of the copyrights to their works (an exception in the non-academic world to this might exist if the authors have, as a condition of employment, agreed to transfer copyright to their employer). We only publish work by current undergraduate students; unfortunately even if you wrote an essay while in college, we cannot consider it after you have graduated.
How do the peer review and editorial process work?
Once you submit your paper, three to five of our peer reviewers will read your work. They will analyze your overall argument, engagement with primary and secondary sources, historiography, and adherence to standard formatting and citations. The Editorial Board reviews all submissions in conjunction with the peer review and discusses the merits of the paper. Then, the Board reaches out to all writers to inform them if their paper is accepted or not. If accepted, essays go through at least one round of editing before publication. As with any journal, this process can be tweaked or adapted to better fit the needs of an individual paper. If you have any additional questions about our process, please reach out to our Editorial team.
What are the submissions guidelines?
Can I submit to the JBHR and another journal during one publication cycle?
No, the JBHR cannot accept submissions of essays currently under consideration with another journal. Please reach out to the Editorial team if you have a personal question regarding this issue.

Peer Reviewers and the Editorial Board
How can I join your Peer Review Team?
Please contact [email protected] or visit our table at the College of William & Mary Club Fair at the beginning of every semester.
What's it like to be a Peer Reviewer?
Fun! After participating in a brief training, Peer Reviewers read a handful of papers per semester and submit a concise write-up to help the Editorial Board. Peer Reviewers support the triple-blind process, the work of emerging historians, and the historical discipline as a whole.
How is the Editorial Board selected?
Peer Reviewers are encouraged to apply to join our Editorial Board at the beginning of each semester, depending on the positions available. Resumes, cover letters, and/or short responses are included in the application process.
